Bassinet Pram..circa 1880....sold
A fine Bassinet pram[cradle on wheels] no hood standing on wooden wheels, and considering her age is in fine condition, a large pram measuring 36 inches long and 19 inches wide...a little info in Jacks book Prams Mailcarts and Bassinets...quotes...
the design of these bassinets [cradle on wheels really].. even in 1880 it was illegal to use a vehicle with more than three wheels on the footpath and a four wheeled vehicle was classed as a road vehicle!
It is not known who overcame this problem but Jack Hampshire believed that it was dealt with simply......by making an ass of the law.
So a pram dealer imported some Bassinets [babies cradle] they were fitted with a simple Chassis, with four wheels, and tried it out on the public footpath..
The law gave in, the rest is history as they say!
Trouble with the design was, difficult to keep clean, the front wheels had to be lifted to steer and also tended to wrench the chassis from the body.Crude springing all in all the poor occupant had quite a bumpy ride!!
But as you must agree nice to have a piece of that history and will look fabulous exhibited at The Pram Society events.

The P.M.Pram
July 8th 2010 was a special day in our house as i was being visited by a wonderful lady Noreen Marshall Senior Curator at the Museum of Childhood Bethnall Green within The V and A Museum in London.
The Museum was interested in purchasing the P.M pram a typical low slung pram from the 1920s... as this was the one decade they had missing.
She was delighted with her purchase for and on behalf of the museum so this beautiful pram will spend its remaining life on display to the world..how fabulous is that??
Ladies next time you visit London and the famous V and A museum of childhood go take a peek..
